Onan Generator Cranks but Has No Spark? Test the Ignition Coil

An older Onan BF, B43, B48, NHC or CCK engine that cranks normally but refuses to fire often sends owners straight to the ignition coil. Sometimes that is the right call, especially when the engine loses spark as it warms up. But a disabled ignition circuit, damaged plug lead, incorrect point gap or wiring fault can create the same symptom.

The goal is to prove what the ignition system is doing before replacing parts. Generator sets can start unexpectedly and produce dangerous voltage, so follow the equipment service procedure, disable automatic starting and disconnect external loads before inspection. If you are not comfortable working around ignition and generator wiring, use a qualified technician.

Start by defining the failure

“Won't start” is not a diagnosis. Confirm that the engine turns at normal cranking speed and that fresh fuel reaches it. Then test for spark with an inline or adjustable spark tester connected according to its instructions. Checking both outputs on a twin-cylinder system helps distinguish a shared ignition failure from a single plug, boot or lead problem.

A spark that is strong when cold but disappears after the engine heats up is useful evidence. Internal insulation can break down with temperature, but terminals and wiring can also open as they expand. Repeat the same measurements cold and hot instead of relying on the symptom alone.

Rule out the easy ignition faults

Inspect the plugs for cracked porcelain, heavy fouling and an incorrect gap. Examine the leads and boots for burns or abrasion, and clean loose or corroded primary terminals. Confirm that engine and battery grounds are clean and tight.

The shutdown circuit deserves special attention. Many engines stop by grounding the ignition. A pinched wire, faulty switch or safety circuit can therefore create a perfect no-spark condition even when the coil is healthy. Isolate that circuit only as directed by the correct service information, and restore every safety connection after the test.

On breaker-point systems, inspect point condition and gap along with the condenser. Burned points or a failed condenser affect the coil's primary switching and can prevent a usable spark. Replacing the coil without correcting those items may change nothing.

Testing the coil without guessing

Disconnect the battery and label the wires before removing terminals. Resistance checks across the primary and secondary windings can reveal an open or shorted winding, but the acceptable values depend on the exact ignition design and meter lead resistance. Use specifications for the engine and coil being tested rather than a generic internet number.

A resistance reading within specification does not reproduce heat and operating voltage, so it cannot clear every intermittent coil. Combine it with the spark test, wiring checks and the hot-versus-cold behavior. A visibly cracked, swollen or carbon-tracked coil is suspect regardless of a convenient bench reading.

Replacement and installation details

Part number matters. The Triumilynn replacement is intended for applications using Onan 166-0820 across the listed BF, B43, B48, NHC and CCK families, but engine family alone does not prove what a decades-old set currently has installed. Compare the number, mounting points and terminal layout with the original.

Photograph the wiring, transfer one lead at a time and keep high-voltage leads away from hot exhaust parts and sharp sheet metal. Tighten terminals securely without crushing them. After installation, verify spark and start the engine with loads disconnected, then inspect for misfire as it warms before returning the generator to service.

Choose the part only after the test

If the system has a proper primary signal, sound wiring and no usable secondary output, the coil becomes a much stronger diagnosis. If the primary side is never being switched, keep tracing the control circuit rather than asking a new coil to solve an upstream fault.

That extra ten minutes of testing matters on an RV or standby set: it avoids unnecessary parts and gives you more confidence that the repair will still work after the engine is fully hot.
