When an RV water pump runs but no water reaches the faucet, the motor is only one part of the system. The usual causes are an empty tank, incorrect winterizing-valve position, blocked strainer, suction-side air leak, trapped air or worn internal valves. Work from the tank toward the pump before replacing it.
Identify the exact symptom
- Pump silent: check the 12-volt supply, fuse, switch, ground and pressure switch.
- Pump runs with no flow: concentrate on tank supply, valve positions, strainer, suction leaks and priming.
- Pump cycles rapidly: inspect restrictions, clogged aerators and pressure-side behavior.
- Pump never shuts off: look for leaks, trapped air, a bad check valve or failure to build pressure.
Restore the normal water path
Confirm the fresh-water tank actually contains water; a level gauge can be inaccurate. Put the city-water/fill and winterizing valves in their normal positions according to the RV diagram. Close low-point drains and check that the suction hose is not kinked. Clean the inlet strainer and inspect its bowl and seal for cracks or a loose fit.
A suction-side connection may pull air without leaking visible water. Check fittings between the tank and pump, including the winterizing pickup tube. Open the nearest cold faucet while priming, but do not leave the pump running dry for an extended period.
Electrical checks still matter
A motor may run but slow down under load if battery voltage is low or a connection has resistance. With the system safely accessible, use the pump manufacturer’s procedure to check voltage at the pump while it is operating. Inspect the ground, fuse holder and switch connections. Disconnect 12-volt power before removing the pump.
When replacement is justified
If the inlet supply is clear and airtight, voltage is correct and the pump still has little suction or cannot build shutoff pressure, worn diaphragm valves, a damaged head or motor may be responsible. Compare flow rating, pressure rating, duty cycle, port orientation, mounting footprint and current draw before choosing a replacement.

After installation
- Use potable-water-rated plumbing components.
- Support hoses so vibration does not strain pump ports.
