The fuel petcock on a Yamaha Big Bear or Warrior looks simple, but it performs three jobs every ride: it supplies fuel, shuts the tank off and gives you access to the reserve pickup. When the valve wears out, the result can be a wet tank, a fuel smell in the garage, unexplained carburetor flooding or an engine that dies even though fuel is still visible in the tank.
Because gasoline can ignite easily, work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, heaters and cigarettes. Let the machine cool before touching the fuel system and keep an approved container ready for drained fuel.
Signs the petcock needs attention
Visible seepage around the selector shaft, mounting threads or hose outlet is the clearest warning. Wipe the area dry and inspect it again rather than assuming the wet spot came from a spill. A valve that continues to flow in the OFF position is also failing its basic job, even if it does not leak externally.
Restricted flow has a different pattern. The ATV may start and idle, then lose power after several minutes or under heavy throttle as the carburetor bowl empties. Switching to RES may temporarily change the symptom. Before blaming the valve, make sure the tank vent and fuel hose are clear and that the fuel itself is clean.
A strong fuel smell, rising engine-oil level or oil that smells like gasoline calls for immediate attention. Stop running the engine. A leaking shut-off valve combined with a carburetor float problem can allow fuel to travel where it does not belong; the carburetor and oil condition should be checked before the ATV is used again.
How to check flow and shut-off
With the engine cool, route the fuel hose into an approved container. Move the selector through ON, OFF and RES while observing the flow. Fuel should stop in OFF and flow steadily in the two supply positions when the tank has enough fuel to cover the corresponding pickup.
If flow is weak in every position, inspect the hose, tank vent and any inline filter. Debris inside the tank can block a new valve just as quickly as the old one, so look at the drained fuel for rust, sediment or deteriorated liner material.
Why ON and RES can behave differently
The normal and reserve positions draw from different heights in the tank. ON uses the taller pickup so a small amount remains when the engine begins to starve. RES uses the lower pickup to reach that remaining fuel. If one position works and the other does not, the problem may be a blocked pickup or a worn selector passage rather than the carburetor.
Reserve is not an extra tank. Once selected, refuel promptly and return the valve to ON. Otherwise there is no warning reserve available the next time the tank runs low.
Replacing the valve cleanly
Drain the fuel to a safe container, remove the hose without twisting its fitting and unthread or unbolt the old valve as appropriate. Compare thread, outlet angle and selector positions before installing the replacement. Do not force mismatched threads into the tank.
Use the correct fuel-resistant seal or gasket for the application and avoid excess sealant that can break loose inside the tank. After installation, add a small amount of fuel and check the valve in every position before filling the tank. Replace a hardened or cracked fuel hose at the same time.
