You thumb the start button and all you get is a single click. No crank, no spin, nothing. Battery looks charged, lights are bright, but the engine just sits there. That click is the sound everybody dreads, and on Yamaha ATVs it usually points at one of two things: a tired battery, or a starter solenoid (also called the starter relay) that's on its way out.
Good news is you can narrow it down in about ten minutes with a multimeter and the correct service information, no parts cannon required. This covers the YFM 250 through 660 crowd, so your Raptor, Grizzly, Kodiak, Wolverine and Big Bear use the same basic setup and show similar failure patterns.
What the click is actually telling you
The solenoid is a heavy-duty electrical switch. When you hit the start button, a small signal wire energizes a coil inside the relay, and that coil slams a big internal contact closed to send full battery current straight to the starter motor. The click you hear is that contact trying to close.
So a click means the coil is working and getting a signal. What's failing is the high-current side, either the contacts inside the solenoid are burned and pitted so they can't pass real amperage, or the battery can't deliver enough juice to spin the starter once the contact closes. Both make the same click.
Pay attention to the pattern too. One solid click and dead silence usually means burned solenoid contacts or a hard connection problem. A rapid machine-gun chatter (click-click-click-click) almost always means low battery voltage, the solenoid keeps trying to pull in and drops out because voltage sags. That rapid-fire chatter is a battery symptom nine times out of ten.
Rule out the battery and grounds first
Before you condemn the solenoid, do this. It's boring but it's where most of these end.
Put a meter on the battery. You want to see 12.6-ish volts at rest. More important, watch it while someone hits the start button. If it nosedives down into the 9s or lower on that one click, the battery is weak or has a bad connection, even if it "looks" charged. A battery that reads 12.6 but collapses under load will click all day long. Charge it fully overnight and re-test before doing anything else.
Then go after the cables and grounds, and I mean actually go after them. Wire-brush both battery posts, the big cable ends at the solenoid, the ground strap where it bolts to the engine block, and the starter's positive lead. Corrosion you can't even see adds resistance that eats the amperage the starter needs. A ton of "bad solenoid" cases are really just a crusty ground bolt. Clean them to bright metal and hit them with dielectric grease when you put them back.
The two-minute solenoid test
For a controlled bypass test, follow the battery's heavy positive cable to the solenoid and use only a manufacturer-approved remote starter switch as directed by the Yamaha service manual. Keep the ATV in neutral with the parking brake set, secure it against movement, and keep hands, tools and loose clothing clear of moving parts. If you do not have the correct switch or service information, have a qualified technician perform this test; never bridge the large terminals with a screwdriver or wrench.
If the starter spins and the engine cranks, your solenoid is bad. You just bypassed it and proved the battery, cables, and starter are all fine. The relay's internal contacts aren't passing current anymore, so replace it.
If nothing happens when you jump the posts, the problem is downstream, look at the starter motor itself, the cable to it, or your grounds again.
Want to confirm it electrically instead? Back-probe the solenoid output post (the one feeding the starter) with your meter and have someone hit start. When it clicks, you should see roughly 12 volts jump onto that output post. If you get the click but no voltage shows up on the output, the contacts are burned and the solenoid is done. Power in on one big post, no power out the other during a click, that's a dead solenoid.
Replacing it, and one trap to avoid
The swap is easy. Disconnect the battery ground first so you don't arc a wrench across the posts. Note where the small trigger wires plug in and which big cable goes on which post, then unbolt the two large cables, unplug the small signal leads, and pull the old relay. Bolt the new one in the same way, snug but don't gorilla the small terminals.
Here's the trap: some cheap aftermarket relays are wired or oriented differently than the Yamaha original, and people bolt them in backwards. Before you toss the old one, lay them side by side and match the terminal layout. If your new solenoid does nothing, double-check you didn't reverse the small trigger wires.
The other thing worth knowing, if you've already replaced the solenoid once and it went bad again fast, don't just blame the part. A solenoid that "keeps going bad" is usually being killed by a bad ground or a chronic bad connection that makes it work too hard. Chase the grounds and cable ends before you burn through another one. And honestly, a lot of the no-name solenoids on the market are built wrong internally and fail early, which is why the recurring-failure complaints are so common.
